5E Lesson 3rd Grade: Ecosystems

Hello,

My name is Paola Escobar and I am currently attending University of Houston. I am working on a 5E lesson on introuducing students about ecosystems. I believe inquiry based lessons are a great way to teach students and have them be hands on but at the same time I feel like it takes a lot of effort and creativity to make those activities interesting and understanding for students. Therefore, my question is what is a good suggestion to have my students doing during Explore?. I was thinking for them to create an ecosystem themselves without knowing it such as having containers as the base with other elements and incorporating the organism such as cricket or a worm. I am not fully aware if my students will be able to complete the task or if it would be too much for them to handle. I will appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

I like your idea and I feel like with the proper execution and patience it can be done ! You could even consider simply taking the kids outside to explore and think about what they see and then come back and discuss the type of ecosystem they think they saw. Or watch a YouTube video , maybe even a read a book. But I honestly really like your idea !

Hello Paola,
I think you have a great idea. I also believe if you provide real different types of ecosystems to the classroom and have the students observe them will get them more into the objective since they are interacting with real life experiences. However, I believe your example will also work perfect and get them to really explore the concept. Hopefully this is helpful for your lesson.
