Rhonda Adams

I consider myself to be a unique middle grade science teacher in that I started in business, got a degree in k-8 education and taught for 4 years in elementary. In that time I came to love teaching science and sought to get an endorsement in integrated sciences earning two masters degrees along the way. I believe I have a unique perspective a lot of science teachers don’t have today in that my degree is in teaching and the science knowledge came after. My main goal in teaching the middle grades is to help the students realize that every subject is useful and will help them in life and feel that science is the one subject that can help them come to this realization. Being at a school where students are learning Spanish as well I incorporate as much of their second language abilities that I can. It is my background in a wide variety of careers, that I hope to make science more Real World for my students.

Forgot to mention that I also incorporate an alternative energy production unit into this.  Gives the kids hope.  There is a NASA CO2 emission video that shows how the planet is capable of healing itself.  Here's a link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1SgmFa0r04 I also show this video of the argument on climate change from a professor who breaks down the argument into three g...

Not sure what your curriculum is before 8th grade, but here in Utah I found it necessary to cover first energy production and what causes CO2 emissions.  Then use lots of graphs showing the link between CO2 and temperature levels.  All of which can be found on multiple websites.  Once the kids see the connection between CO2 and temperatures, then it was necessary to do another unit on how our wea...

I am hoping to do a professional development with my school to get all teachers, no matter what subject, to incorporate the science more.  I am wondering if any of you have had experience with this, or perhaps share any strategies you have used to get people on board with this idea.  Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

5 Great resource!
Haven't had the chance to view all the parts of this collection but the ones I have viewed are very informative! Some are appropriate even for your students. It shows real scientists and the data that is supporting Climate change. It makes it more real world for your students, and teachers on a very difficult issue to understand!

5 Will help all subject teachers learn NGSS!
I am designing a program for my school right now to adopt the new SEEd science core standards for our state and this sample was extremely helpful! It gives all teachers, not just science teachers, a better idea of how they all support the new science core. Thanks!

5 Great framework for Inquiry Based Learning
I am putting together resources to get teachers started on using inquiry based learning strategies in their classrooms. Our school is K-9 and this article is more written for high school instruction but I like it because it gives the lower grade teachers more of an idea of what they are preparing their students for in their educational future.
