I teach 5th grade Earth Science in NYC. Our Scope and Sequence begins teaching plate tectonics in the elementary grades. I like the Class Dojo. I am trying it out to keep track of specific students in my classes. It is easier and quicker than always writing an anecdotal for everything they do. To have that up for the students to see, however, is sketchy ground here in NY. The admins would see it as "publicly" humiliating a student when they misbehave or not do something. Not that I agree with them either.

The hands on activity looked very involved at first. As I read the article I realized it was doable for my classroom. The directions are very detailed and the writer explains each step so I could fully understand. I plan to try this activity with one of my classes. It seems to be a great lesson.

3 Does it rock? assessment
The probe assessment gets the students really thinking about what they have learned and to form their own understandings. I would have the students discuss their ideas before putting them to paper. It is open ended. It doesn't seem too involved however, and I am not sure if it would result with many of them being able to communicate their thoughts clearly

This relatively short article confirms the need of reading and writing in Science. It cites several sources of information such as the Framework For K-12 Science Education.
