Hi, my name is Melina. I am currently attending The University of Texas at Tyler. I am working towers getting my EC-6 teaching degree. I was born in Houston, Texas and moved to East Texas when I was 14. My goal is to be the best teacher I can be and be there for my students. How would you motivate and encourage students in your class to really learn/understand the material versus simple memorizing of facts?

5 Alternative Assessments for English Language Learners
1. Why did you choose to put this article in your collection? Be specific...." because it looked interesting" is not sufficient. I chose this article because as a future teacher, I know that there will be a lot of ELLs students in my classroom and I wanted to learn about a better way to assess them other than just using written or answer choice tests. 2. What new information did you learn? Drawings can be used to assess how much a student has learned. Some students are not very good at expressing their knowledge in writing, so drawing is another great way to see what information they are grasping 3. What TEKS would it go with and how could you use this information in your classroom? I could use this strategy when teaching about adaptations, life cycles, food pyramid, food web, end so much more. One TEK that could be used for this topic is 2.10C - investigate and record some of the unique stages that insects such as grasshoppers and butterflies undergo during their life cycle. 4. Based on your experience, is there anything in the article that you agree with? Disagree with? Have questions about? I agree with letting the students help define the rubric. This allows the students to understand what they will be graded on.

5 Bringing Moon Phases Down to Earth
1. Why did you choose to put this article in your collection? Be specific...." because it looked interesting" is not sufficient. I chose this article because I am fascinated by the moon and I wanted to find a fun way to introduce the moon phases to my future students so that they can be just as fascinated with the moon as I am. 2. What new information did you learn? This article gave a few different alternatives for what I can do if the students are still struggling with learning the moon phases. I learned that even when he gave a blank piece of paper with just circles and the students had to shade in the moon, some students were having trouble shading in on the correct side. But, for some reason, when he gave them a black piece of construction paper and white chalk, these same students were better able to visualize the moon phases and shade in the correct sides. 3. What TEKS would it go with and how could you use this information in your classroom? 4.8C - collect and analyze data to identify sequences and predict patterns of change in shadows, seasons, and the observable appearance of the Moon over time. I could use the given list of tailored activities to make sure that all of my students are understanding the moon phases. 4. Based on your experience, is there anything in the article that you agree with? Disagree with? Have questions about? I like how the author starts the unit by taking the students outside to show them that the moon and the sun can be out at the same time.

5 The Home Zone-Research Rolypolies
1. Why did you choose to put this article in your collection? I chose this article because I know that children love to watch Rolypolies roll up into a ball and I feel like it would make an interesting object to do research over. 2. What new information did you learn? Rolypolies are not insects! They are crustaceans because they have exoskeletons, antennas, and many pairs of jointed legs like shrimp and crab. 3. What TEKS would it go with and how could you use this information in your classroom? 2.10A observe, record, and compare how the physical characteristics and behaviors of animals help them meet their basic needs. I could use this information as an introduction to the lesson about roly-polies 4. Based on your experience, is there anything in the article that you agree with? Disagree with? Have questions about? No
