Hello, I'm Katie! I am in my second year of the MAT program at UMBC...and I am loving it! I am in the Elementary Education program, still trying to decide which grade (or grades) is a good fit for me. Aside from education, I am a Mom to two amazing boys, a wife to a super supportive husband, a lover of good books, and I'm a little obsessed with Outlander and GoT!

As a pre-service teacher, I am constantly wondering how teachers get their kids hooked onto new topics/themes. What are some simple, time-conscious, but FUN ways to get kids hooked on elementary-level science? Specific unit/lesson ideas are welcome! Thanks.

Eyeglasses and a bottle of water (clear bottle) come to mind.  I just particpated in an engaging pop-up demo at the MD Science Center that focused on refraction. They showed visitors two things...The first demonstration of refraction was a clear, glass beaker filled half-way with water. Then a pencil was put into the water. Refraction caused the pencil to look bent/broken underneath the water....
