empirical and molecular formulas are difficult for students to grasp initially because, in the classroom, it's pretty hard to envision. I use foods with distinct and easily separated parts for a hands-on visual. I can't find my newest one for some reason...must be on a flash drive or another computer at school, but you can check this one out to get an idea

I used a clip of flubber right before we discussed polymerization and thus created a slime-like polymer that kinda looks like flubber. I had kids try to explain the molecular interaction that was taking place. It was short and sweet.

In my AP Chemistry class we do a guided inquiry to find the mass percent of citric acid in Goofy Powder- the only colorlessly dissolveable candy powder that I know. We make a major assumption that citric acid is the only acid present, however. But the students must research and complete their own lab procedures. etc. We do this after the acid base unit
