I have found (by trial and error) that "guided" independent work is best! For example, I explain a step of the experiment, let the students complete the step, then regroup with the class. We then would move on to the next step. Sometimes I even give them a time limit for each step to keep them on task.

I agree with many of the other posts. In fact, students will ask to borrow a book over the summer to prepare for the next year. We typically use the book to reinforce a lesson or activity. They learn mainly from experiments, research, and hands-on activities. The book serves as a guide. I would say BE FLEXIBLE! Evaluate how your lesson is going and be ready to change it to fit that particular class. Also, if you want to change it for the next year, make sure you note it immediately- you will never remember the next year if you don't! It is also ok to not have every answer.
