I feel that students learn best through direct and hands-on experiences. Hands-on experiences are great because they keep students engaged and let them be in charge of their learning. I feel that students need to be responsible for their learning, and hands-on experiences allow them to be. There are many resources that can be used for hands-on experiences if teachers are creative in finding ways ...

I feel that science notebooks can be a great way to evaluate and assess students. Science notebooks give students a place to document their thinking and changes in their thinking during the learning process. As students document their thinking, teachers can check for understanding, which can then facilitate more discussion. Science notebooks provide a record of both student thinking and scientific...

5 Food Web/Chain Collection Review
This collection, by Jenneffer Pinto, can help teachers gather information to teach their students about food chains and food webs. The resources in this collection include Coral Reef Ecosystems, Interdependence of Life: Agents of Change in Ecosystems, Savvy Consumers Through Science, Surviving Winter in the Dust Bowl (Food Chains and Trophic Levels), and Teaching Through Trade Books: Figuring Out Food Chains. This collection includes the SciPack Coral Reef Ecosystems. SciPacks let teachers enhance their understanding of a scientific concept for the purpose of student learning. The collection also includes the Science Object Interdependence of Life: Agents of Change in Ecosystems. Science Objects are inquiry-based modules that help teachers better understand the science content they plan to teach. This collection provides activities that teachers can do with their students for them to investigate and construct models of food chains or food webs. Allowing students to investigate and construct models helps them grasp core ideas. The book chapter in this collection talks about an activity to help students understand food chains, the interactions between trophic levels, the interdependency of organisms, and how energy flows through a system. This activity also helps students learn how to construct explanations, argue from evidence, and communicate information. This collection can help teachers teach their students the idea that various influences can force an ecosystem into a state of different equilibrium.
