After 20 years at a nature center (doing a lot of bird research), I jumped ship & became a science teacher. Thanks to the Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship, going back to grad school was free ... only everything was crunched down into 1 hectic year. I'm trying to improve my practice every year (for instance, I'm also a member of the American Modeling Teachers Association). If nothing else, cool PD is fun. :-)

I am teaching biology & physics using modeling instruction. You're entirely right - Engineering is something you're going to have to add, it's not built in to the AMTA-supplied materials. But other than that, it should be easy. The biology units even list the appropriate NGSS PEs.

I have my bio students list 10 things they eat & trace it all back to plants. So, milk & cereal - the cereal is wheat (or corn) & the milk comes from a cow that eats grass. This can lead to "what else eats corn" or "what if something happens to corn" etc.

Go beyond the standards & include dissolving/ solutions. When I've taught chemistry, a salad is my example of a mixture & kool aid (the homemade kind) is my example of a solution.
