Hello Cody, You might want to go to the HHMI BioInteractive site and download cards with pictures of producers and consumers. You could have your students work in small groups instead of a whole class activity. Each group could create a simple food chain first, then use more cards to create a food web. Here's a link to some very good resources from AMNH for integrating literacy strategies, including introducing students to CER. Although I'm unsure of the grade level, I think a teacher can modify any of those to fit their needs so it's appropriate for their students.
