Malcolm Pringle

I wear many hats: 30 year career in research geology (various places around the world, last 8 at MIT), 2 years teaching middle school math and science in Boston, 5 years teaching contextualized science and math content and pedagogy classes to K-12 teachers at Northeastern (math, earth & environmental science, physics, energy through all the disciplines), all leading to a second career (we live long enough to have two 30-year careers, right?) ideally spending 50% in K-12 and early college experience classrooms and 50% re-developing and teaching those contextualized content and pedagogy classes into the kind of PD tool that implementing the NGSS is going to demand. I'm especially excited about what I see as the K-12 Framework and NGSS getting right -- facilitating science learning by fully integrating practices and content from the broadest possible perspective.

For a practical, and timely, application, the NASA Kepler mission site developed a bunch of activities: http://kepler.nasa.gov/education/activities/ I especially like the Transit tracks pdf, which can be used as a stand alone: http://kepler.nasa.gov/education/activities/transitTracks/ Although making a set of Lego Orreries and using a web camera for a light detector with the Light Grap...

Nathan – I think you are trying to equate apples and oranges. The “ambiguity” you sense seems based on an imprecise use of words and their meanings. In my view, the critical thinking skills we are trying to help our students develop *MUST* include distinguishing the meaning of the same word in different contexts. For example: -- Evidence in the science classroom is not the same as evi...
