Shontell Davis

This is my 10th year teaching science and I feel that I have been doing a disservice all this time. I began working with students in the science department and just LOVED IT!! I've worked with high schoolers (started) and middle schoolers (currently), and the middle school has been the most fun. I like knowing that I’m sending a more knowledgeable group of students the high school way. Reflecting on my teaching experience, I realized that I spent more time on the delivery of the material and less on the structure and purpose. My goal is to find a balance between delivery, structure, and purpose. I want to be more effective and knowledgeable about the disciplines taught on the middle school level.

I loved doing this experiment. The one thing I would change is doing it out side. I would record record myself performing the activity to show in class then take them outside. Less mess!!

Hi Abby I teach in Louisiana. I tell my students that FAILURE = SUCCESS! I have it posted on my board. I tell my students that I expect them to fail first when working on STEM activities especially. I have found that they are more willing to participate when I elaborate on the "why it didnt't work" than "it didn't work"! Besure to celebrate the mistakes. Lisa, what  a great idea. I have to do hands on, blind learning every week next year and your idea will allow me to incorporate an alternative to computer time. I used paper puzzles and or word searches but now this would help me to move closer to paperless learning.

5 Building a STEM lesson
Chapter 9 of this book was a tremendous help to me working a sliding a STEM lesson into a curriculum that gives no room for application. It also enlightened me on how the 5Es work specifically on a concept I'm currently working on. I look forward to utilizing the other chapters in some capacity throughout my current year. Just love the book!

5 Solving without a plan
I enjoyed reading this article. It reminded me of when I was growing up, we had to create things to ride out of spare parts laying around. We didn't realize then that we would be considered "Mechanical Engineers" today according to the article. Amazing to say the least.

5 INBs
I love using INBs in the classroom. They help the students organize the learning and it also allows the students to review the concepts covered that day! As I develop as a teacher, I found that I was not allowing my students to put their own spin on their individual learning through art. I realize that every group I get changes from year to year, so I now realize that I must change as well. This publication helped me to revise how my structure when using INBs needs to be modified yearly...and be OK with the change!
