Hello Michelle, when I first started as a major of Elementary Education two of my biggest fears were how to teach math and science. For math I was scared because I had forgotten most of the content, for science I was scared because I didn't know how to teach it. If it makes any sense to say, science to me is just the way things are. Well, that's what I used to think. I have found that science is ...

Hello Emmalee, I have found that students have creativity but sometimes lack a certain structure to express all their knowledge. A science notebook is a great way to provide that structure in an organized manner. You can have students have composition notebooks and have them divide the notebook into sections using sticky notes. I would definitely suggest having a section for data (this is where th...

Hello Amber, I suggest maybe putting the children to work in groups when doing lessons that require hands on activities. Give all the students a chance to show off their skills and perhaps put girls in the role of the "group leader" from time to time. Also, I think that a lot of students are intimidated by some of the equipment, like a balance. In this case, I would say that you demonstrate how to...

5 SCE 4311 Review
Hello Jessica, I noticed that your collection is based entirely on force and motion. I appreciate that they are not randomized topics and that the science objects all relate to one another. I also think it was a smart move to include science objects about gravity since gravity is a major force. Furthermore, I looked through the science object “Gravity and Orbits: Orbit” and I found that it focused more on the orbiting of satellites – the effect mass has on it, the concept of weightlessness and microgravity. I thought that it was very well put together. I also thought it was strategic to include a journal article about gravity is, because not only will it be useful to someone who doesn’t know it, but to you as an instructor on how to teach it to your students. That being said, given that the point of the collection was to be able to use it for the SCE course in another way, I think you were successful. The resources in your collection will prove to be very helpful and effective as you plan your instruction for the students in your field placement class. Not only do you have access to the very useful article on the concept of gravity, but you have an entire list of vocabulary words that you may chose to pre-teach. The resources in your collection can also help you as you do your lesson planning worksheet because it provides you with many quiz questions you can use as a base to create some of the questions to ask during your inquiry lesson.
