The Story Orchestra is a fantastic book!  Very vivid images with a great story line: https://www.amazon.com/Story-Orchestra-Seasons-Press-Vivaldis/dp/1847808778/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1542221883&sr=8-4&keywords=seasons+children%27s+book

One idea for you.  If you create specific jobs for each member of a group during a exploration such as: photographer, measurer, recorder, etc.  This gives them responsibility and keeps the more active students from "taking-over" an exploration.  You should lay out the discriptions for each of the roles that they may recieve.  Students should be encouraged not to be upset if they don't get the job...

You could do the classic option with baking soda and vinegar in a bottle that blows up a balloon.  This would be especially interesting for younger elementary students! Good luck!

I loved reading about how first graders can explore living and nonliving things that aligns with the two standards: Abilities necessary to do science inquiry and Understanding about science inquiry. There were some great questions to guide students in learning such as: "Have you ever seen it move, does it need to eat or drink?"

This article briefly shares about a five-book series called "I Wonder Why?". They share the ideas that students will be learning and show several images from the book. The illustrations are captivating and imaginative. They share at the very end how student can use shadow play to explore this concept! "These books explore the marvels of light, color, machines, sound, and other phenomena related to physical science".
