I would do a week long track of earth quakes from the usgs.gov website. Every hour we would look at the information and the students would put it up on a large map of the globe. By the end of the week the ring of fire is pretty well defined. Google Earth is also an awesome computer resource if your class has access to it.

Last year I made a tool that would show the transit of the sun in relation to the Latitude of the viewer and the day of the year. If you are interested in something like that let me know. I did it for a 5th grade classroom. A little advanced for them but we completed the project in 3 45 minute class periods. It was pretty cool.

I have ventured into notebooks this year. It is work but the rewards are amazing. In just one unit I can see deeper connections to the content. This collection has fantastic articles filled with tips and strategies to get you going.
