Physical Changes, Chemical Changes, and How to Tell the Difference
|
This web seminar took place on December 5, 2012, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern
Time. The presenter was Adam M. Boyd from the Office
of K–8 Science at the American Chemical Society (ACS). In this program Mr. Boyd
shared strategies for teaching about physical changes and chemical changes, and
he talked about related resources included in an ACS activity kit celebrating the
international year of chemistry.
The PowerPoint, related resources from the NSTA Learning Center, and web links from
the presentation are now contained in the above resource collection. Clicking on
the collection link will place it in your Learning Center, My Library,
neatly organized under the My Resource Collections tab.
During this web seminar Mr. Boyd introduced participating educators to a kit developed
by ACS for the international year of chemistry that includes lessons, demonstrations,
student activity sheets, and discussion ideas. Mr. Boyd provided a close-up look
at the featured concept from the kit: how to tell the difference between chemical
changes and physical changes. He shared teacher demos, investigation activities,
and extensions that can help students gain a real-world understanding of the key
distinctions between the two types of change. Participants watched video clips and
discussed their own ideas for implementing the lessons in the classroom.
Seminar participants received an NSTA SciGuide. A certificate of attendance
was deposited into participants' My PD Record and Certificates area in
the NSTA Learning Center for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.
Here are some comments provided by the participants at the end of the Web Seminar:
- “This was an excellent, worthwhile session. Very good! It refreshed my memory
about some important concepts.”
- “I love being pointed to related resources and follow up activities that look
like they are pretty simple to implement, but appropriate for my 7th graders.”
- “Thoroughly enjoyed the webinar and the ability to interact with the presentation
screen.”
Thanks to the participants and the presenter for the learning opportunity, the interactions,
and a job well done!
