How to Avoid Disqualification in ExploraVision?
All web seminar participants use online tools that allow them to mark-up presenter's slides or share desktop applications in addition to engaging in chat with others online and answering poll questions

This Web Seminar took place on January 12, 2011 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Presenting was Brian Short from NSTA and Jonathan Gastel from Stuyvesant High School New York, NY. The presenters provided an overview of the ExploraVision program and specific tips on how to avoid disqualification.

The PowerPoint, related resources from the NSTA Learning Center, and web links from the presentation are now contained in the above resource collection. Clicking on the collection link will place it in your Learning Center, My Library, neatly organized under the My Resource Collections tab.

The presenter provided information on the basic components of ExploraVision program with an emphasis on the most common items that cause disqualification. Jonathan Gastel shared his experience as a mentor in the program, to give participants the ‘insider’s view’ of the competition. The participants asked a large number of questions that were answered by Brian and Jonathan. Individuals who are competing in the program for this year are encouraged to view the archive to help them appropriately prepare their entry.

Twenty-six (26) participants were present at the live Web Seminar in addition to the presenters and NSTA staff. Participating educators represented the states of Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, South Dakota and Virginia. One participant joined the presentation from a country outside of the United States: Canada.

Seminar participants received one of the NSTA SciGuides. A certificate of attendance was deposited into participants My PD Record and Certificates area in the NSTA Learning Center for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.

Here are some comments provided by the participants at the end of the Web Seminar:

  • “It offered many hints and explanations about the contest. Also we could ask questions.”
  • “I would love to get a group of students together to participate, and I am finally in a school where that is possible.”
  • “I would like to put a group of students together next year to compete and having the information presented will help me plan for next year.”
  • “I like participating in competitions and I am very interested in technology competitions.”

Thanks to the participants and the presenters for the learning opportunity, the interactions, and a job well done!
