Lunar Nautics: Designing a Mission to Live and Work on the Moon
All web seminar participants use online tools that allow them to mark-up presenter's slides or share desktop applications in addition to engaging in chat with others online and answering poll questions

This Web Seminar took place on September 14, 2010, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Presenting was Ruda Kashiri, NASA Explorer Schools Coordinator. In this Seminar, Ms. Kashiri focused the discussion on a couple of the Lunar Nautics activities that can be used in the classroom.

The PowerPoint, related resources from the NSTA Learning Center, and web links from the presentation are now contained in the above resource collection. Clicking on the collection link will place it in your Learning Center, My Library, neatly organized under the My Resource Collections tab.

This is first presentation of the Lunar Nautics program and the program will be repeated throughout the academic year. Ms. Kashiri showed the participants Rocket Staging: Balloon Staging, Lunar Landing: Swinging Tray and Lunar Base Supply: Egg Drop. For each of the activities attendees were given an overview of the activity, information about the required materials and how to find them in the teachers guide, and a video clip about how teachers have introduced this to their classes.

Fifteen (15) participants were present at the live Web Seminar in addition to the presenter and NSTA staff. Participating educators represented the states of Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington and Wisconsin.

Seminar participants received one of the NSTA SciGuides. A certificate of attendance was deposited into participants My PD Record and Certificates area in the NSTA Learning Center for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.

Here are some comments provided by the participants at the end of the Web Seminar:

  • "By far one of if not the best one I have attended. This will add content to my classroom."
  • "I can use all materials presented!"
  • "The activity ideas were fantastic! I am coordinating an elementary science night event that includes an egg drop challenge event. The information contained in this webinar and in the Lunar Nautics teacher's guide is exactly what I need to make this event a success!"
  • "Providing excellent content and resources."

Thanks to the participants and the presenter for the learning opportunity, the interactions, and a job well done!
