Newton's Laws of Motion: Lunar Nautics

This web seminar took place on February 14, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. eastern standard time. The presenter was Rudo Kashiri, NASA Explorer Schools Education Specialist at NASA Langley Research Center. In this program Ms. Kashiri shared three hands-on activities that give middle school students a chance to experiment with Newton’s Laws of Motion.

The PowerPoint, related resources from the NSTA Learning Center, and web links from the presentation are now contained in the above resource collection. Clicking on the collection link will place it in your Learning Center, My Library, neatly organized under the My Resource Collections tab.

This was the second presentation of Newton’s Laws of Motion: Lunar Nautics for the 2012-13 school year. In this seminar Ms. Kashiri addressed common misconceptions associated with Newton’s Laws of Motion. She then connected the laws to NASA’s mission to explore Mars with the Curiosity lander. Participants got an in-depth look at three related lessons that help students gain a real world understanding of these concepts:

  • Rocket Staging: Balloon Staging
  • Lunar Landing: Swinging Tray
  • Lunar Base Supply Egg Drop

Seminar participants received one of the NSTA SciGuides. A certificate of attendance was deposited into participants' My PD Record and Certificates area in the NSTA Learning Center for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.

Here are some comments provided by the participants at the end of the Web Seminar:

  • “Awesome job by the presenter. I will take these ideas and have my students increase their depth of knowledge regarding Newton's laws.”
  • “The chat was great as it allowed communication amongst participants. Many of them shared ideas they'd tried in the past and were able to increase my ability to visualize ways to use these in my classroom.”

Thanks to the participants and the presenter for the learning opportunity, the interactions, and a job well done!
