Applying the Next Generation Science Standards, Middle School Engineering Design to Newton's Laws of Motion
This web seminar took place on June 19, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. eastern
daylight time. The presenter was Rudo Kashiri, NASA
Explorer Schools Education Specialist at NASA Langley Research Center. In this program
Ms. Kashiri connected the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to three hands-on
activities that give middle school students a chance to experiment with Newton’s
Laws of Motion.
The PowerPoint, related resources from the NSTA Learning Center, and web links from
the presentation are now contained in the above resource collection. Clicking on
the collection link will place it in your Learning Center, My Library,
neatly organized under the My Resource Collections tab.
In this seminar Ms. Kashiri addressed common misconceptions associated with Newton’s
Laws of Motion. She talked about how the laws apply to NASA’s mission to explore
Mars with the Curiosity lander. Ms. Kashiri then provided an in-depth look at three
related lessons, including connections to NGSS, materials lists, tips for implementation,
and discussion questions. Participants watched several video clips showing the lessons
Seminar participants received an NSTA SciGuide. A certificate of attendance
was deposited into participants' My PD Record and Certificates area in
the NSTA Learning Center for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.
Here are some comments provided by the participants at the end of the Web Seminar:
- “Love the lessons and resources. I really like to see how it is used with NGSS specifically.
As we all get familiar with this, it is nice to see it in action.”
- “This was a very engaging and informative set of lessons connecting teachers to
the NGSS. The actual application of this information to our students will be the
true test of its impact on teaching via NGSS. I was very pleased!”
- “Loved the variation on the old balloon rocket activity. This was my first exposure
to seeing lessons tied to the NGSS, which was very valuable.”
Thanks to the participants and the presenter for the learning opportunity, the interactions,
and a job well done!
