Engineering Design Challenge: Thermal Protection System

This web seminar took place on March 28, 2013, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. eastern daylight time. The presenter was Rudo Kashiri, NASA Explorer Schools Education Specialist at NASA Langley Research Center. In this program Ms. Kashiri shared strategies for implementing a hands-on activity that challenges students to design their own thermal protection system and test it in the lab.

The PowerPoint, related resources from the NSTA Learning Center, and web links from the presentation are now contained in the above resource collection. Clicking on the collection link will place it in your Learning Center, My Library, neatly organized under the My Resource Collections tab.

This was the second presentation of Engineering Design Challenge: Thermal Protection System for the 2012–13 school year. In this seminar Ms. Kashiri talked about NASA’s missions to Mars and the necessity of protecting spacecraft from extreme heat. She linked this real-world problem to the concepts of heat transfer, thermal conductivity, and heat capacity. She then introduced a lesson that gives students a chance to gain firsthand knowledge of these concepts by designing, testing, and modifying a miniature thermal protection system. Participants watched videos featuring students engaged with the design challenge in the classroom.

Seminar participants received an NSTA SciGuide. A certificate of attendance was deposited into participants' My PD Record and Certificates area in the NSTA Learning Center for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.

Here are some comments provided by the participants at the end of the Web Seminar:

  • “Great! Engaging and useful ideas for the classroom.”
  • “The interactive lesson was great and I came away with a lab experiment to teach my students.”

Thanks to the participants and the presenter for the learning opportunity, the interactions, and a job well done!
