Chemistry of Water: Mars Exploration—Is There Water on Mars?

This web seminar took place on December 17, 2012, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The presenter was Rachel Power, NASA Explorer Schools and Digital Learning Network Coordinator at NASA Kennedy Space Center. In this program Ms. Power talked about a lesson that allows students to explore the question of whether there could be liquid water on Mars.

The PowerPoint, related resources from the NSTA Learning Center, and web links from the presentation are now contained in the above resource collection. Clicking on the collection link will place it in your Learning Center, My Library, neatly organized under the My Resource Collections tab.

This was the first presentation of Chemistry of Water: Mars Exploration—Is There Water on Mars? for the 2012–13 school year. In this seminar Ms. Power provided background information on NASA’s missions to Mars. She connected the search for water on Mars to a hands-on activity that teaches students how atmospheric pressure and vapor pressure affect the boiling point of water. Participants watched videos showing the lesson in action. They also learned about extension activities and online resources for engaging students.

Seminar participants received an NSTA SciGuide. A certificate of attendance was deposited into participants' My PD Record and Certificates area in the NSTA Learning Center for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.

Here are some comments provided by the participants at the end of the Web Seminar:

  • “Wonderful. I am teaching thermodynamics in my engineering classes and will use the lab activity to demonstrate this to my students.”
  • “Very well done with great info that I can present to my kids. Thank you.”

Thanks to the participants and the presenter for the learning opportunity, the interactions, and a job well done!
