Temperature and Earth Climate: Modeling Hot and Cold Planets

This web seminar took place on January 24, 2013, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. eastern standard time. The presenter was Rudo Kashiri, NASA Explorer Schools Education Specialist at NASA Langley Research Center. In this program Ms. Kashiri talked about a lesson that allows students to work with data collected from NASA satellites to determine the climate of different planets.

The PowerPoint, related resources from the NSTA Learning Center, and web links from the presentation are now contained in the above resource collection. Clicking on the collection link will place it in your Learning Center, My Library, neatly organized under the My Resource Collections tab.

This was the first presentation of Temperature and Earth Climate: Modeling Hot and Cold Planets for the 2012–13 school year. In the seminar Ms. Kashiri discussed the factors that affect a planet’s climate and described NASA’s research on the climates of Venus and Mars. She provided details on a hands-on activity that gives students a chance to experiment with these factors by creating a model and testing it with a computer simulation that uses NASA satellite data. Participating educators tried out the simulation and watched videos of the lesson in action.

Seminar participants received an NSTA SciGuide. A certificate of attendance was deposited into participants' My PD Record and Certificates area in the NSTA Learning Center for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.

Here are some comments provided by the participants at the end of the Web Seminar:

  • “I learned new information that I can share with my class tomorrow!”
  • “Great web seminar. The content was very interesting and easy to follow. This gave me ideas of how I can incorporate some of this in my classes.”

Thanks to the participants and the presenter for the learning opportunity, the interactions, and a job well done!
