Engineering Design Challenge: Water Filtration

This web seminar took place on January 14, 2013, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The presenter was Rachel Power, NASA Explorer Schools and Digital Learning Network Coordinator at NASA Kennedy Space Center. In this program Ms. Power described a hands-on activity that challenges students to design a water filtration device similar to the system used to recycle water on the International Space Station.

The PowerPoint, related resources from the NSTA Learning Center, and web links from the presentation are now contained in the above resource collection. Clicking on the collection link will place it in your Learning Center, My Library, neatly organized under the My Resource Collections tab.

This was the first presentation of Engineering Design Challenge: Water Filtration for the 2012–13 school year. In this seminar Ms. Power discussed the ways water is recycled by nature, municipalities, and NASA in space. She talked about the need for sophisticated water filtration systems on-board the International Space Station in order to reduce the amount of freshwater brought from Earth. Ms. Power shared details about implementing an engineering design challenge in class. She talked about required materials and equipment, the concepts students will learn, and extension activities.

Seminar participants received one of the NSTA SciGuides. A certificate of attendance was deposited into participants' My PD Record and Certificates area in the NSTA Learning Center for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.

Here are some comments provided by the participants at the end of the Web Seminar:

  • “The seminar presented excellent activities for teaching extremely important lessons. I enjoyed the video of the students working.”
  • “The presenter was attentive to the questions and gave great links related to the subject.”
  • “I appreciate hearing the inside stories and learning more about how it really works on the ISS.”

Thanks to the participants and the presenter for the learning opportunity, the interactions, and a job well done!
