Planning Your Professional Learning Experiences

This Web Seminar took place on December 14, 2011 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Presenting was Flavio Mendez, Senior Director, NSTA Learning Center. In this Seminar, Mr. Mendez focused on the Learning Center’s PD Plan and Portfolio tool. He also showed participants how to add resources to their libraries.

The PowerPoint and related resources from the NSTA Learning Center are now contained in the above resource collection. Clicking on the collection link will place it in your Learning Center, My Library, neatly organized under the My Resource Collections tab.

In this presentation, Mr. Mendez discussed how the PD Plan and Portfolio tool can help teachers catalog their professional development. In addition, Mr. Mendez gave a brief overview of the Learning Center and showcased some of the interactive elements from various SciPacks and Science Objects. Participants also practiced adding Learning Center resources to their personal libraries.

Fifty-eight (58) participants were present at the live Web Seminar in addition to the presenter and NSTA staff. Participating educators represented the states of California, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. In addition, five participants joined the program from locations outside of the United States: Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Germany, India, and Puerto Rico.

Here are some comments provided by the participants at the end of the Web Seminar:

  • “It provided valuable resources on documenting progress in my professional development and utilizing the resources available on the NSTA website.”
  • “I am always looking to improve myself in my content knowledge and pedagogical skills. The resources available will not only help me to reach my goals but to also document them - something I often neglect. I am also looking forward to building my library of resources.”
  • “It will help me keep all my work related to Certification in one place and easy to assess at any point of time. I feel I will be in a state of preparedness all time.”
  • “This was relevant to me because I use the Learning Center but was unaware of many of its tools. Now I will be able to use it more effectively.”

Thanks to the participants and the presenters for the learning opportunity, the interactions, and a job well done!
