National Science Teachers Association The NSTA Learning Center: Personalized Professional Learning in Collaboration with Other Colleagues

This web seminar took place on May 12, 2016, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. The presenter was Flavio Mendez, NSTA Learning Center Sr. Director.

Mr. Mendez gave an overview of the NSTA Learning Center and described how it can be used as an online textbook when teaching science pre-service teachers. He shared examples of successful application in pre-service teacher classrooms and then invited guest professors Mohr, Day, and Jones to share their experiences using the Learning Center with teacher candidates and to answer questions from the audience.Mendez talked about the NSTA Learning Center’s (NSTA LC) thousands of resources and opportunities available to all teachers. Users of the NSTA LC do not need to be members of NSTA to create a free account and use the portal. There are over 4,000 free resources in the NSTA LC available to all teachers. Free resources like web seminar archives, award-winning journal articles, and e-book chapters can enhance science teachers’ content knowledge and pedagogy. In addition to free resources and opportunities, the NSTA LC has free professional learning tools for educators including My Library, PD Indexer, My Profile, and My Learning Plan. Fourteen public forums for asynchronous discussion are also available to all users at no cost.
