Effects of Climate Change:
Oceans and Ice

All web seminar participants use online tools that allow them to mark-up presenter's slides or share desktop applications in addition to engaging in chat with others online and answering poll questions

This Web Seminar took place April 14, 2010 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Presenting was Dr. Lisa Gardiner, Educational Designer with the Office of Education and Outreach at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. In part four of the series, Dr. Gardiner presented information on the current and anticipated effects of climate change on Earth’s oceans and large areas of ice coverage.

This web seminar is part of a series of six programs designed to bring climate education resources to secondary educators from the Office of Education and Outreach at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research [UCAR]. Dr. Gardiner talked about sea level rise, decrease in glaciation, ocean current changes and ocean acidification. She also showed several classroom hands-on and online activities to help students understand these concepts.

Fifty eight (58) participants were present at the live Web Seminar in addition to the presenter and NSTA staff. Participating educators represented the states of California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Three participants joined from countries outside of the United States: Australia, Mexico and Romania.

Seminar participants received a one year subscription to one of NSTA’s SciGuides and a certificate of attendance was deposited into their PD Record and Certificates area in the NSTA Learning Center for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.

  • “Experiments and ideas for student interaction with slides.”

  • “I learned some new terms and I will use some of the links provided during the webinar in my climate studies course.”
