Presenters:
Dr. Anuradha Koratkar
Anuradha Koratkar received her Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Michigan
in 1990. Dr. Koratkar's research field is active galactic nuclei. She worked at
Space Telescope Science Institute for 13 years from 1990 to 2003, first as post-doctoral
fellow and then as an instrument scientist for the Hubble Space Telescope. In 2000
she began working in the field of information systems and developed applications
that enhanced science returns from NASA's Earth and Space science missions. In 2001,
her team received the NASA Software of the Year Award, Honorable Mention, for the
Scientist's Expert Assistant software prototype that provides interactive tools
for science proposal development. Dr. Koratkar is currently an Associate Research
Scientist at the University of Maryland Baltimore County's Goddard Earth Science
and Technology (GEST) Center, located at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, in Greenbelt,
MD. Dr. Koratkar is particularly interested in using advanced information technologies
to enhance STEM education.
Dr. Susan Hoban
Susan Hoban received her Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Maryland in 1989.
Dr. Hoban conducted research in cometary science at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center,
first as a National Research Council fellow, then as part of USRA Visiting Scientist
Program from 1989 to 1993. In 1993, she began working in the field of information
systems for science and education. In 1996, Dr. Hoban received the NASA Special
Service Award for her work on web-based educational outreach. Dr. Hoban served as
the Acting Associate Director (1998) and subsequently Director (1999–2000) of the
USRA Center of Excellence in Space Data and Information Science. Dr. Hoban is currently
a Senior Research Scientist at the University of Maryland Baltimore County's Goddard
Earth Science and Technology (GEST) Center, located at NASA Goddard Space Flight
Center, in Greenbelt, MD. Dr. Hoban is particularly interested in using advanced
information technologies to enhance STEM education.
Albert Hill
Albert Hill is a senior at Wesleyan University. He is double majoring in Mathematics
and Music. In high school Mr. Hill interned in the Engineering Research Center for
Computer-Integrated Surgical Systems and Technology at Johns Hopkins University.
Mr. Hill took his first step towards science education as an intern for The Baltimore
Sun's Science & Health section. At school he has worked as a laboratory assistant
in a computational physics laboratory. At present Mr. Hill is an intern for The
Fundamental of Lunar Exploration project at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Mr.
Hill is particularly interested in educational techniques that use various subjects
to compliment each other and keep students engaged in learning.
Brendan Shaughnessy
Brendan Shaughnessy is currently a senior at New Mexico State University (NMSU)
pursuing a degree in Computer Science and a Minor in Mathematics and East Asian
studies. He has participated as a presenter in several of the Coalition of Essential
Schools Annual Fall Forums. He has also participated in many competitions including
the 2000 Mars Settlement Design Competition and the 2001 WERC Environmental Design
Competition. From 2002 to 2004 he worked as a tutor for NMSU and as a programmer
for Information and Communication Technologies. Currently he works as a programmer
for the Digital Media Lab, building web pages for NASA's Educational Outreach and
Digital Learning Network programs.
