This web seminar took place on December 11, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. eastern
standard time. The presenters were Jo Anne Vasquez of the Helios Education Foundation,
Mariel Milano of Orange County Public Schools, and Cary Sneider of Portland State
Dr. Sneider began the presentation by describing the essential elements of a STEM
lesson and defining literacy in each of the components of STEM (science, technology,
engineering, and math). Dr. Vasquez then talked about three approaches to integrated
STEM-multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary. She also discussed
implications for implementing the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
Ms. Milano provided an example of a STEM challenge for students and shared strategies
for the classroom.
