Rocks as Windows into the Past: Taking the idea of rocks as stories and developing a rock investigationby: Mark Girod

In order to best teach fourth-grade students about rocks, the author used an empowering metaphor—rocks as stories from the past—that was applied to an entire unit. Rather than seeing rocks as lifeless, uninteresting chunks students kick while walking down the street, they could view them in a new way: as windows into the geologic history of Earth. This article describes this inquiry-based lesson and how it resulted in positive attitudes towards science, more passionate learners, and more scientifically literate children.

This article uses story telling and writing to get students interested and involved in studying rocks. When students think about how a specific rock came to be and all the changes it goes through they become more interested as it no longer seems to be just a "rock". The article also includes some experiments to do with rocks.

Each rock has a story to tell about earth;s history. Mark Girod takes you through how he motivated even the most reluctant learners in his 4th grade class to see rocks in a new perspective. I was inspired !
