The author discusses how to outline a thematic unit based on Science Standards from the NSES (1996 Science Standards). She explains how she uses interdisciplinary connections, observations, and "experiments" to help students to develop their own models and understandings of a concept. This method will work equally well with the NGSS (2012/13 Science Standards) and provides a wonderful example of how to set up a thematic unit.
