Fourth-grade students gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of “properties” by evaluating and comparing play doughs. Students also hone their observation and reporting skills and enrich their vocabulary, integrating language arts into this activity.

Make-your-own-play-doe is a great inquiry activity that strengthens observation skills. By experimenting with different recipes and creating a product that is introduced during a class presentation, students are engaged in science and science discussions. This is a great idea to start the year or to use when introducing the importance of making good observations.
