This article addressed how students can use science notebooks for learning. They can take notes, complete lab work and document any new observations and predictions. I like the use of science notebooks due to the documentation of student work.

I agree with the author on the textbook can be used as tools in class. I will use the textbook for a little bit and do not depend on it. The notebook is a great way to develop students learning and record their progress. I like the idea that the teacher will provide a notebook model for students while teaching them how to make and use the notebook.

I learned that textbook can be used as tools in my class. If we think about the content, reading level, approach to instruction, physical characteristics and availability of supplemental material, the textbook can be used as a good resource in classroom. In this article, the author states that notebook also can be a good tool in science teaching. The using of notebook has three levels: mechanical use, developing use and insightful use. In the first stage, users focus on the basic elements, they copy the important concepts and information from textbook or board in their notebooks. In the second stage, users focus more on the content, the notebooks provide students with focus question, which can help students to concentrate on students’ thinking and conclude the knowledge. In the last stage, students try to use notebooks as scientists would to help them develop and defend argument. It is important for students to know how valuable the notebook is for themselves. And it is also important for teacher to help students improve their ability to use notebooks. Therefore, teachers should provide more opportunities to learn how to use notebook well and use a variety of strategies to help students develop their notebook, such as share the good notebook temple. In the future, I will teach and require my students to use notebook in my science classroom. And I will provide the notebook model with pretty picture and drawing to help my students find fun in notebook. So they can keep interests in take notes and develop the skills about take notes.
