The author of this article describes six guideposts for assessment. The first describes the two fold purpose of formative assessment – to understand what a student knows and to give constructive feedback. The second is to consider suggestions for improvement to students not just a grade for what they know. This will lead to continued learning. Students should score classroom papers to serve as a review. Let students make mistakes, this is how we often learn. Reflective lessons also extend learning for students. There is some valuable advice in this short article.

The author describes the difference between formative and summative assessment and provides some useful guideposts for formative assessment. When using formative assessment you must include the processes used to give feedback to a student to find out what they know. This kind of assessment should provide constructive feedback to the learner. There is other useful information that really clarifies the difference between both kinds of assessment.
