As secondary science teachers, we must remember that scientific literacy cannot be attained without fundamental literacy--the ability to read and comprehend textual information and write competently about the subject under study. To achieve literacy success, the Science-Cognition-Literacy Framework (Figure 1) was designed to give science teachers a basis for visualization of the sequencing of cognitive processes and instructional activities for developing science inquiry skills, and applying them to reading (and writing) activities based in science.

The author of this article created a Science-Cognition-Literacy (SCL) Framework described in this article. Figure 1 in this article is a graphic representation of all aspects of this framework that helps improve reading comprehension using science inquiry skills. There are six phases in the framework that address necessary science skills that include questioning, prediction and more. Each of these is linked to a reading application that helps students develop that skill. Although a good idea this article would be strengthened with a few specific examples of each.

The Common Core has caused many science teachers to focus on improving science literacy in their classroom. This article, which introduces the author’s Science-Cognition-Literacy Framework, provides a guide that assists teachers in implementing strategies designed to improve science literacy. Although this is not a “how-to” article, it does have a list of reading practices that teachers can use to help students become better readers while improving inquiry skills. Teachers who are at a loss for how to embed reading strategies in the classroom will find this article useful. Veteran teachers will no doubt recognize many of the tried-and-true methods listed.
