Science Sampler: The experiment event by: Polly White

Journal ArticleDigital resources are stored online in your NSTA Library.

The annual Experiment Event is the culminating activity of an extensive study of questioning, problem solving, and the inquiry process. Easily addressing national and state standards for science inquiry, the Experiment Event is only part—perhaps the best part—of a unit of cooperative work. Assignment requirements are to plan, conduct, conclude, and present a demonstration of a scientific concept or an experiment using human subjects. The requirements and a timeline of the planning stages of the project are outlined here.

This article puts a new twist on Family Science Nights. Students are asked to create an experiment that will use human subjects, create a backboard similar to a science fair backboard and a description of the experiment. These are set up in the gym one evening and families come to participate in the experiments which results in data for the student presenters.
