Properties of Objects and Materials

SciGuide

SciGuides are a collection of thematically aligned lesson plans, simulations, and web-based resources for teachers to use with their students centered on standards-aligned science concepts.

Support your students’ natural curiosity by engaging them in observations and manipulations of objects and materials. They should describe attributes of objects. They should subject materials to mixing, heating, freezing, stretching, bending, and anything else they can safely do. In the process they will be recognizing differences and similarities and building vocabulary. They will be developing the ability to categorize.

SciGuides are really fantastic. When it's time to teach physical science, I can be confident knowing I'll have the Properties of Objects and Materials SciGuide to go to for lesson plans, simulations, and web-based resources. I'll be able to create outstanding lessons in a shorter amount of time since many resources are easily accessible in this SciGuide.

Very basic, yet this sci-guide contains the foundational concepts of how a student should learn the properties of matter and its composition. It tackles about colors, boiling point, etc, and other physical properties, that can later be considered more than just physical properties because of their being more related to the intrinsic qualities of objects and materials.

This is a great Sci Guide for lower elementary teachers that are preparing to teach properties to their students. This Sci Guide is a helpful resource as it provides numerous examples of how the students could identify objects and materials as well as the tools that can be used to measure these properties. There are many useful links that explain different ways that objects can be classified along with providing lesson plans and student work samples. All of the material is presented in a manner that will engage lower elementary students and is able to be tailored to suit students from kindergarten through grade four. As an elementary teacher myself, I would highly recommend utilizing this Sci Guide when teaching properties of objects and materials to lower elementary students.

SciGuide: Chemistry This Sciguide focuses on lessons, activities, and resources appropriate for K-4 grade classroom. Students will learn to classify objects and materials in activities like Mystery Box and Fingerprints: Origin and Patterns. There are a variety of lesson ideas on sorting, grouping and graphing. The BBC School Science Clip-Sorting and Using Materials is an interactive game for lower elementary students to virtually test objects to see if they are waterproof and bendy. Students are then asked to sort the objects using these attributes. Students will also learn about the tools used to measure properties of objects like rulers, thermometers, and balances. Overall I found this useful in my second grade class.
