Explaining Matter with Elements, Atoms, and Molecules: Characteristics of Elements

Science ObjectDigital resources are stored online in your NSTA Library.

Science Objects are two hour, on-line interactive inquiry-based content modules that help teachers better understand the science content they teach. This Science Object is the first of three Science Objects in the Explaining Matter with Elements, Atoms, and Molecules SciPack. It explores the properties of substances, how certain properties can be used to distinguish change in a substance, and the break down of substances to get to the most pure or elemental form of the substance.

I really enjoy Science Objects. In 1-3 hours, the Explaining Matter with Elements, Atoms, and Molecules: Characteristics of Elements Science Object will help me re-learn, refresh, or learn for the first time some critical science concepts I will have to know to obtain my Science Educator credentials. I appreciate that I can complete them at my own pace, and that, if used as park of a SciPack, I have access to a content expert to go to for help. The NSTA Learning Center Science Objects are really beneficial!

This sci-object has given the concepts of matter and its composition more detailed and organized rationalization that can increase awareness in a learner.

Trying to put together you own periodic table was challenging and exciting.

This is very informative and I feel more confident teaching these concepts. I would have given 5 stars if I could have opened the hands-on activities. A box opens but it is blank.

Good information on melting point vs. boiling point, density, and solubility.

This is a pretty good introduction to chemistry or physical science. the level is a little low to challenge high performing high school students, but the simplicity would allow students to learn on their own.
