What better way to learn English than through the study of science, and what better way to learn about science than experiencing it through language and literacy in and out of the classroom. Sutman, Allen, and Shoemaker (1986) observed in Learning English Through Science that science and language link us to knowledge of the world and beyond, to understanding people, phenomena, and processes. But this understanding is difficult to obtain in our culture without developing proficiency in the English language. This first chapter provides an overview of the central themes that guide and improve the teaching of science to English Language learners. This chapter is intended to introduce the rest of the author's book. As such, it does a good job of explaining the big picture connection between learning science and learning English. It actually makes me interested in reading the rest of the book where the author would provide ideas on how to help students in this area.

This is chapter 1 for the book on teaching English in Science. This chapter does just two things. 1) it provides an argument for why science is a great place to help ELL students to learn English speaking and writing skills. 2) It does provide brief descriptions of other chapters in the book so if someone was interested in a specific topic, they could skim this and determine what chapter best fit their needs. If you are already interested in this idea and are looking for lesson framework ideas, choose a different chapter. If you are interested in examining the possibilities this is the perfect chapter for you!
