The purpose of this assessment probe is to elicit students’ ideas about temperature. The task specifically probes to find out whether students recognize that non-heat-producing objects exposed to the same ambient conditions will have the same temperature, regardless of the material they are made of.

This author has created many formative assessments probes and this is one of my favorites. First you administer the probe to assess students preconceptions, then you are given discussion points and activity ideas to help students understand their misconception.

I gave this probe to a group of teachers from all disciplines. It asks if items left out on a table have different temperatures. Only one person out of a group of 20 got it correct. Great question that opens up a great discussion about temperature and non heat producing objects.
