In this chapter, students investigate Earth’s atmosphere, beginning with a study of the hydrologic cycle. They examine how factors such as pressure, saturation, and air density contribute to weather. Students are introduced to concepts of air masses and the ways these masses interact to produce weather. Students examine patterns, using them to make predictions and forecasts about weather conditions. With the new common core standards coming on board nation wide, I was nervous to venture into teaching a unit on weather. This book chapter on Meteorology provide easy to follow lesson ideas, with real world data recording. Included in the lessons are diagram that help explain terms and background information that helps give the teacher a great foundation on which teach. This is an excellent book chapter that I recommend to anyone who is preparing a weather unit.

This is an excellent resource for educators that are new to our profession or those who would like to add inquiry learning labs to their classroom. The book "Earth Science Success: 50 Lesson Plans for Grades 6-9" is presented as a one year set of Earth Science labs. The lesson plans include a suggested timeframe, science notebook suggestions, student handouts and follow-up labs that could be used for enrichment or re-teaching. I love the innovative idea of links to "ES Success" through NSTA websites; that include electronic versions of handouts so that you are able to personalize for individual classes!

Chapters 1-4 focus on the the theories behind forces that interact with weather systems such as: the hydrolytic cycle, gas density, temperature and pressure, ending with a technology activity that has students analyze weather fronts and maps. Each lab activity asks students to make predictions, to gather data, to identify variables and improvements and to answer open-ended questions with a constructed response. The authors provide teacher guides, activity extensions, diagrams and student worksheets for each lab.I recommend this lesson unit because it is easy to follow, uses everyday materials and a hands-on inquiry approach to science teaching.

This series of activities, including a pretest and formative assessment, provide a hands-on introduction to the topic of what causes weather, and dispels a few common misconceptions. Does not delve deeply into content.
