Center of Mass 1by: Michael Horton

Book ChapterDigital resources are stored online in your NSTA Library.

This activity will help students see that a low center of mass helps objects balance. This is important engineering in car and motorcycle racing and robotics. This activity is inquiry in that students would probably predict that you could not get one object completely over the side of the table before they begin. Question 3 is Level 2 inquiry because the student is given the question and comes up with his or her own procedure and conclusions.

I am a middle school teacher looking for a few simple investigations that my students can complete as homework. These take home labs are great for using simple materials to elegantly explain science concepts. The questions are designed for a high school student, but can be modified for the middle school student.
