The purpose of the activity, in this chapter, is to help students understand that theories do not become laws in science and that there is no hierarchal relationship between these two types of scientific knowledge. This activity is also designed to address many of the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy, which have a strong emphasis on literacy in science.

Whether it is explanation or argumentation, students engage in a similar process each time. This chapter has students writing a paper. Maybe this is more of an end of the year assignment to see how much students can incorporate what they have learned during the course of the year into the paper.
