In this chapter students conduct direct and indirect investigations to answer the question, How is the sanderling adapted to survive in two different environments? The unit focuses on the sanderling, a shorebird that migrates from warm, sunny beaches to the Arctic tundra to breed each year. The direct investigation in this lesson involves students in simulations of the sanderlings’ feeding habits. In the indirect investigation, students take part in idea circles in which they work in collaborative groups to learn about the tundra through informational texts.
