The purpose of this assessment probe is to elicit students’ ideas about seeds. It specifically probes to find out if students recognize that a seed has needs, similar to other organisms that allow it to develop into the next stage of its life cycle.

I gave the students (middle school) the probe. I then had students take seeds, paper towels (damp), and plastic storage bags. All through the unit, eventhough students saw that you could sprout seeds without soil, I had to refer to this activity several times as a reminder. Great prompt.
