The purpose of this assessment probe is to elicit students’ ideas about boiling point. The probe is designed to find out whether students recognize that if a liquid is boiling under standard conditions, the boiling point remains constant, no matter how much heat is applied.

The probe checks to see if students understand that the boiling temperature of a substance, this case water, is constant regardless of the amount of heat provided. As all probes, background information and suggestions for using the probes in the classroom is provided.
