Most teachers and parents will agree: Children are natural inventors. They also enjoy building things with such manipulatives as Legos. Robotics was the route to dynamic, problem-based learning for fourth- and fifth-grade students at Emma Sherman Elementary School at Henrietta, New York, because it capitalized on students’ natural inventing abilities and enthusiasm for constructing. This article describes how these elementary students collaborated with engineering students from The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to build, design, and program robots using ROBOLAB.

A technology teacher in an elementary school introduced a technology-based pull-out program for 45 students once a week from October to May as a way to build what was called “engineering intuition.” Through a Tapestry Grant from Toyota this educator was able to purchase Lego Equipment which is pricey on a regular school budget. After that hurtle reading this article explains how she went about utilizing that equipment throughout the school year to achiever her goal for her students. This is a very interesting approaching.

This article explains, in detail, a 4th/5th grade robotics program. The authors not only explain the activities in the program, but also discuss funding and ideas to expand the program. Examples of student work and connections to the standards. I look forward to using the problem-based ideas presented in the article as part of STEM focused curriculum.

This article provides great incite to bringing robotics into a classroom and school environment. The detail in which the article explains planning and steps of a fourth and fifth grade program. It is a great read all the way through.
