SciGuides are a collection of thematically aligned lesson plans, simulations, and web-based resources for teachers to use with their students centered on standards-aligned science concepts.

What affects how physical characteristics are transmitted from parent to offspring? This is a question that can be answered at many levels.

Molecular biologists examine the pattern of nucleotides in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and the effect of mutations on the proteins produced. SciGuides are really fantastic.When it's time to teach about genetics, I can be confident knowing I'll have the Genetics SciGuide to go to for lesson plans, simulations, and web-based resources. I'll be able to create outstanding lessons in a shorter amount of time since many resources are easily accessible in this SciGuide

The curriculum map included is a good outline for first time teachers to follow. There are useful links provided. One of the best links is to the University of Utah Genetics Learning Center, under the Biotechnology theme. This link covers concepts from all three of the major themes in the Genetics SciGuide. This resource offers lesson plans for teachers and presents valuable information for students. Labs and activities that engage students can be used with online content or in place of it. Learn.Genetics also provides virtual labs for students if you do not have resources or materials available. Overall a great collection of resources for teachers that correlates to benchmarks.

Excellent resource collection to establish the foundation of a student in the studies of genetics. Three themes: Biotechnology, Inheritance, and Molecular and Cellular Genetics organize the whole concept into its content. Includes a wide variety of resources for teaching and learning.

As soon as you open the genetics SciGuide you can already see how it is up to date and relates to the current trends in genetics. You can either click on one of the three sections of interest or get an overview of everything that it has to offer by opening up the SciGuide Map. As you venture through each of the sections you will find activities and tutorials for almost everything from mitosis and meiosis to bioengineering and gene mapping. There are both online activities and lesson ideas that will enhance any curriculum. Even before you open up a section, you can simply view the icons to determine if it is something that you could use. I was truly impressed with the range of the activities. There is something here for everyone from simple explanations of subjects like the "DNA Testing for Nonscientist" link all the way up to things like the "Human Genetics Problem Sets" that could be used for AP classes. There are even career specific activities that could be used in classes other than science like the forensic unit. The only things that I found could be improved were the need for dihybrid Punnett square activities and maybe even something on pedigrees.

If your students are visual learners like mine, this might be a great resource for you. Click on the Molecular and Cellular Genetics Theme, then click Structure of DNA, which will then take you to the site which has virtual tours of the following: 1) The Basics, 2) DNA to Protein, 3) Heredity & Traits, and 4) Amazing Cells. I was thinking of projecting this site and showing students the different vitual tours. For the Cell tour, as you move the mouse around the cell, the different organelles are zoomed in and provides information about what it does and provides a simulation of the organelle in "action". The Heredity and Traits tour explains and shows easy to understand visuals about heredity and traits and why siblings look similar and different from their parents.

This SciGuide is something that I would be able to use to teach my own classes for several reasons. The first and most important is because it features activities and concepts that are rigorous and relevant to creating meaningful learning opportunities for students. For example, the lesson plan on forensics is something that a lot of students could be interested in. One of the extension activities that is in this SciGuide is having a police officer come to educate students about how genetics plays into crime scene investigations and providing concrete evidence. I am lucky to be a part of a school that has a partnership with the FBI. This year our FBI partners actually plan on hosting an interdisciplinary unit that includes forensics and crime scene investigation. I could use the idea in the lesson plan that has students make powerpoint slides and have them present a topic that they're interested in that their peers don't know a lot about. I would highly recommend that any teacher who is teaching biology browse through this SciGuide.

I really liked this SciGuide for its resources on biotechnology. Usually, biotech is a large and vast subject where you search endlessly for information, but this SciGuide really condenses it for teacher consumption. Additionally, I really liked the forensics activity. In the section of inheritance, the links were good but the activity was very generic and did not have much specificity to the content.

This SciGuide is a good tool to use for when you are going to be teaching Genetics in your classroom. Genetics is a topic that includes many subtopics as DNA, Inheritance, Dominance, Incomplete/Codominance, Blood Type, Genetic Engineering to modify organisms, Mapping Genomes, Genetic Diseases, sex-linked traits, etc. There is a great amount of materials to teach the students, however, finding the proper resources or what students consider “interesting” might be a challenge. This SciGuide provides both teachers and students with resources that are meaningful that allows the feeling of having some connection between the individual and the content. When you first enter the SciGuide, the SciGuide is separated by three themes which are Biotechnology, Inheritance, and Molecular/Cellular Genetics. This helps the teacher not to waste time in order to find a particular topic that the teacher is aiming to teach. Once you click on the themes, it provides you with links for the subtopics belonging to that particular theme. For example, if you were to click on the Inheritance Theme, it provides you links for Human Disorders, Nature vs. Nurture, and Pattern of Inheritance. On the right side of the window, you’ll also notice that you can download lesson plans, Case Studies, Sample Sudio and student work. If you go to the Links page, they provide possible lesson plan materials for teachers, as well as web sites for students to use for their research, self-study, or even for personal benefit. The sites provided for students are great because some are made by colleges and universities to not only educate students but also to make the topic interesting for the students. When you look at the sites for teachers, it provides you with activities that you can do with your students as an introduction activity to provide general information (or to get students to think about the content). Some sites even provide a full-class lesson plan that you can follow through to provide an interesting hands-on learning activity rather than straight book work or answering questions by going through web pages. A good example of this is the site below… Which allows students to go through a hands-on activity to learn about Genetic Variation. The activity includes investigation, some degree of math, and of course, critical thinking to answer the investigative questions to fulfill the learning objectives of the lesson. As I think about how I might be able to use this SciGuide in my teaching, I’m planning on using the interactive sites with my students to introduce the content in a more intriguing manner. For example, when going over Karyotype, I’ll plan on using the link provided by the SciGuide and work through the problems with the class using my interactive smartboard instead of just providing notes on the subject as I’ve done in the past. To provide a more student-centered teaching, I could use the student web sites as resources for the students and assign some form of projects which will allow the student some degree of freedom on what they would like to learn from the project, as well as having the freedom to decide how they would want to present the project. The appropriate topics for this kind of project within the SciGuide are Types of Human Disorders, how nature/nurture affect development, and the ethics behind the used of Biotechnology. Although many of the resources on this SciGuide are great, I’ve encountered one problem with it. Some of the links on the SciGuide are no-longer available. I think that should be fixed, or at least, the section should be deleted. I think it’ll be great if more lesson plans are added as well to teach variety of subtopics, or even varies of a specific lesson plan to reach students with different learning styles more effectively.

The Genetics High School Sci Guide is a good resource to help you teach how physical characteristics are transmitted from parent to offspring. The Sci Guide provides teaching resources organized into three themes Biotechnology, Inheritance and Molecular and Cellular Genetics. The Sci Guide touches on cloning, forensics, genetic engineering, genome mapping, genetic disorders, nature vs. nurture, gene expression and mutations. One topic that I enjoyed using was the topic of epigenetics. I really enjoyed showing the video Ghost in you genes which talked about how what you do in your life time can actually turn off and turn on the genes in your offspring. Along with video there are lots of interactive websites involving building DNA and Cell reproduction.
