Crosscutting concepts are sometimes the neglected dimension of the NGSS and other standards based on the Framework for K-12 Science Education. But crosscutting concepts can provide students a useful lens for making sense of phenomena. They include patterns; cause and effect; scale, proportion, and quantity; systems and system models; energy and matter; structure and function; and stability and change. The four-hour program will begin with an all-group presentation that will provide an overview of the crosscutting concepts. This session will be followed by a parallel breakout session with three different presentations that participants can choose from, focusing on the crosscutting concepts within the different science disciplines (Life, Earth, and Physical Science). The conference concludes with another all-group presentation looking at assessment. In between sessions, participants will enjoy a fifteen-minute break to rest and to login to the next session on the schedule. All sessions will be archived, allowing all registered participants the opportunity to watch ALL the presentations on-demand, when convenient.
By the end of this virtual conference, participants will be able to:
- Construct an explanation of why crosscutting concepts are valuable tools for students as they make sense of phenomena.
- Analyze students learning in a specific disciplinary context to determine the role crosscutting concepts played in their learning.
- Explain how student’s understanding of the crosscutting concepts can be assessed.
